Why Do We Love Pirates?

It is true that pirates did a lot of nasty things, however, for centuries we have romanticized their stories in film, print and song. Here at Blackbeard Yacht Charters we appreciate the privateer’s sense of independence and adventure. Living outside the bounds of normal society and setting their own rules. Following their hearts on high seas adventures!

Blackbeard

Blackbeard, who’s real name was Edward Teach, was one of the boldest and most notorious pirates in the “Golden Age” of pirating. He was active in the early 1700s along the coast of the Eastern and Southern United States, and in the Caribbean.

He was an intelligent man, who used his smarts to cultivate a fearsome image, driving terror into the hearts of mere mortals. He had a long black beard which he famously plaited into numerous braids, weaving in cords of hemp, which would smoke when he lit them on fire. He wore a sword on his hip with pistols and daggers on his waist and across his chest.

Born in 1680, he met his demise in 1718, brought down by a British Lieutenant named Robert Maynard. They battled on the deck of a ship off the coast of Virginia with Blackbeard reportedly fighting on even after being shot and having his throat cut.

Edward Teach is our favorite pirate due to his intelligence, style and dogged determination.
